Cybersecurity

As vehicles become smarter, they also become more vulnerable to hacking and data theft. Security has become both a human behavior issue – as organizational security is championed throughout corporations – and a systems issue. High-assurance systems and cybersecurity are essential at different layers of communications.

Challenges and solutions in automotive cybersecurity range from physical security to supply chain management. Research hinges on understanding current and potential future threats, assessing and addressing security risks throughout the supply chain, and developing software, hardware, and aftercare solutions.

Defense-in-depth approaches to security design must be integrated into autonomous vehicles -  ensuring that we not only don’t rely on single points of failure, but that systems are resilient to attack and respond appropriately if sensors fail, and that we are able to engage back-up systems to quickly restore control in the event of a cyber attack.
