Vote Now and Help Name MSU’s New Autonomous Bus - Vote via Google Form Embedded on this Page by May 31

Thank you for your interest in helping us name MSU’s new autonomous bus. We received over 240 fantastic submissions with more than 120 unique names submitted, many of them aligning well with our criteria, which called for names that are catchy, creative, futuristic and uniquely MSU.

We sincerely thank each and every student who took time to submit a name to our contest! We appreciate your enthusiasm surrounding the future of mobility on our campus and beyond.

A committee took on the difficult challenge of selecting the FINAL FOUR names for students and the public to vote on. The finalists include SpartanXpress, Spartanomous, Spartabus and Campus Cruiser. The students who were first to submit each of the final four names in the competition's initial phase have been notified via email that their ideas have advanced to the next round.

While Phase 1 of our contest was limited to students, Phase 2 – the voting – is open to everyone. Please take the time to vote – we are excited to see which of the final four names the public will pick to be the winning name!

When considering which name to vote for, please keep in mind this will be a permanent name for the bus. Here is background information about our new mode of transportation:

  • It is a result of an MSU Mobility collaboration with ADASTEC, a leading software company specializing in automated driving software solutions, and Vicinity Motor Corp., a key producer of electric and clean-energy vehicles.
  • The electric autonomous bus will arrive on campus this spring with plans to take passengers in the fall, following a series of robust tests and certifications.
  • The new bus is 28-feet long, features 22 seats and is Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Buy America-compliant. Additionally, the accessible bus will feature an automatic ramp and a fully automatic wheelchair securement station.
  • Advanced technology onboard includes six LiDAR, six radars, eight RGB cameras and a C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) unit.
  • The bus route will be announced at a later date.

Rules for Voting

Voting is open to all members of the public, regardless of age and any MSU affiliation. No purchase is necessary to vote, and voters may only vote once per day throughout the voting period, which runs May 23 through May 31. Additional votes beyond once per day will not be counted. Voters must submit a valid name and email address when submitting. Voting will close at 11:59 ET on May 31, and we will announce the winning name in June.

In the event of a tie, the MSU Mobility bus naming committee will be responsible for selecting the winning name.

Grand Prize

The winner will receive free Spin scooter rides on MSU’s campus for approximately one year and see the winning name featured prominently on the wrap of the bus. If an issue prevents the winner from using Spin scooters, MSU Mobility will provide an alternative prize at its discretion.
