Dr. Gates has extensive research experience in traffic safety, traffic engineering, traffic operations, and driver behavior and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on these subjects. Since 2007, he has served as PI or co-PI on greater than $12.0 million worth of funded research on greater than 60 competitive grants. Current and recently research projects include: safety and operational impacts associated with raising speed limits (Michigan DOT, Montana DOT, Strategic Highway Research Program, Part 2); driver behavior at signalized intersections (National Cooperative Highway Research Program); safety impacts of intersection sight distance (National Cooperative Highway Research Program); safety performance and economic assessment of roadway design features (Michigan DOT); safety and operational impacts of highway rumble strips (Michigan DOT); highway work zone safety and operations (Michigan DOT, Federal Highway Administration); and pedestrian behavior and safety (USDOT).
